However, long-term use remains a concern.įor youth nonsmokers, there is considerably more concern regarding the rapid levels of growth. 8, 9 Thus, current evidence allows for the possibility that e-cigarettes may improve the health of cigarette smokers, provided they are motivated to completely quit smoking. 1, 4, 5 However, e-cigarettes are not harmless 6, 7 and the evidence regarding the effectiveness of e-cigarettes for quitting cigarette smoking, although supportive, also suggests that long-term use is common. 1 – 3 For cigarette smokers seeking to quit, switching from cigarette smoking to e-cigarette “vaping” may be an effective harm reduction technique, given the substantially lower levels of harm found with e-cigarette use to date. The extent to which e-cigarettes are helpful or harmful to public health will depend on the differential impact concerning two key groups: (1) cigarette smokers seeking to quit and (2) youth susceptible to smoking. The impact of electronic nicotine delivery systems (“e-cigarettes”) on population health continues to be controversial.
